Factory Equipment Examples by Category
An RPO build sheet lists a GM vehicle's factory codes one after another, without the headings a window sticker uses. Sorting them into a few categories makes the list much easier to read. The examples below show what to look for in each category once you have the record for your VIN.
Engines
The engine code is more precise than the displacement on a badge. Two engines of the same size can belong to different families with different parts and service needs, so the code is what to match when you order parts or compare vehicles.
| Code | Engine |
|---|---|
| LS3 | 6.2L V8 |
| L86 | 6.2L V8 EcoTec3 |
| L83 | 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 |
| LFX | 3.6L V6 |
The LS3 and the L86 are both 6.2-liter V8s, yet they are separate engines, which is exactly the kind of difference a "6.2L" listing hides.
Suspension & off-road
Off-road packages are easy to misrepresent, because badges and decals can be added later. The code list shows whether the package was installed at the factory.
| Code | Equipment |
|---|---|
| Z71 | Off-Road Suspension Package |
| Z85 | Standard / heavy-duty suspension |
Axles, differentials & trailering
For a truck or SUV bought for towing, this is the category to check first. Alongside the codes below, many GM trucks carry an axle-ratio code such as GU6, GT4 or GT5 (3.42, 3.73 or 4.10), and some have JL1, the integrated trailer brake controller.
| Code | Equipment |
|---|---|
| G80 | Locking / limited-slip rear differential |
| NHT | Max Trailering Package |
| Z82 | Trailering equipment |
Installed equipment is not a tow rating. A trailering package tells you what hardware was fitted; the rating depends on the full configuration and comes from the manufacturer's published figures for that model year.
Interior, audio & technology
Comfort and convenience features are the easiest to check in person. The code list adds one thing a walk-around can't: whether a feature was installed at the factory or added afterward.
| Code | Equipment |
|---|---|
| UQA | Bose premium audio system |
| AG1 | Power driver-seat adjuster |
| C49 | Rear-window defogger |
These are common GM examples, shown to illustrate each category; what a given code means can vary by model, year and division. Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Fiat and Alfa Romeo vehicles use factory sales codes instead, and their build sheet lists installed equipment with a code and description for each item. See GM RPO codes explained, or look up a VIN to see the record available for your vehicle.
