Where to find your VIN

Your VIN is a unique 17-character code, and you can read it from any one of three standard places — each gives you the exact same number:

• Base of the windshield, driver's side. Stand outside the car and look at the lower-left corner of the glass; a small metal plate shows the VIN, no door required.
• Driver's door-jamb sticker. Open the driver's door and check the frame — the compliance sticker lists the VIN alongside tire-pressure and load ratings.
• Registration, insurance card, and title. Every official ownership document carries the VIN, which is the easiest source when you're researching a vehicle remotely.

If the physical labels are faded or you're checking a car before you see it in person, the paperwork is the most dependable place to read it.

Which vehicles are supported

The lookup works for GM brands — Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and GMC — and for FCA / Stellantis brands — Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, RAM, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo. The tool reads the manufacturer from the VIN and routes the request to the right source automatically; you don't have to tell it the make.

Newer GM models (roughly 2020 and later) usually have the original window-sticker PDF on file, while older GM vehicles return the build sheet instead. FCA / Stellantis vehicles return their factory build sheet of sales codes. In every case you get the factory record of how the vehicle was equipped — and if a sticker isn't available, the build sheet fills the gap.
