What is a window sticker?

A window sticker — officially the "Monroney label" — is the printed sheet the factory attaches to the window of every new vehicle. It has been federally required on new cars in the United States since the Monroney Act of 1958, and decades later it remains the single most authoritative summary of how a particular vehicle left the assembly line.

Code 18A is present on my 2021 Chevrolet Traverse, with the description “Accent stripe: Gunmetal. This code identifies a factory paint, stripe, or exterior appearance treatment” The visible equipment does not match what I expected. Has anyone run into a similar mismatch?

My experience has been positive, but the benefit depends on how the vehicle is used. I would treat 18A as confirmation of the configuration, then evaluate whether that equipment matters for your driving.

If the feature is listed but not working, scan all related modules before assuming it was removed. A stored fault, replacement module, or configuration mismatch can make original equipment appear absent.

I would avoid buying retrofit parts until the connectors and module support are confirmed. Returning electronic or VIN-programmed components can be difficult.

The dealer should be able to pull a VIN-specific equipment or parts record. Ask them to search by VIN rather than entering only the three-character code.

The wording may be abbreviated because these were originally production codes rather than consumer descriptions. “Accent stripe: Gunmetal. This code identifies a factory paint, stripe, or exterior appearance treatment” is a reasonable plain-English reading, but the exact implementation should be verified for the 2021 model.
